Anxiety and Depression
ANXIETY:
When working with people suffering from anxiety we need to look at firstly methods of managing the symptoms of anxiety and secondly explore and address the underlying causes of the anxiety.
Anxiety is comprised of worrisome thoughts plus excessive emotional and physical arousal. Anxiety can cause various physical symptoms including headaches, palpitations, muscle tension, insomnia, poor concentration, fatigue and hyperventilation.
Worrying thoughts about everyday issues big and small can bring about anxious feelings. Many of us worry constantly about work, money, family, health etc. While these things may in fact be worrisome, constantly thinking about them does nothing to change things so we will explore different methods of controlling those worrying thoughts.
Energy Psychotherapy namely Emotional Freedom Techniques and Thought Field Therapy have also been found by many clients to be helpful in managing their anxiety symptoms. This is a simple to learn technique which clients can use between counselling sessions to assist them in reducing the effects of their anxiety at home.
Anxiety is also a symptom of Trauma: please go to that page for more information.
DEPRESSION:
Depression or depressed are words we might use to describe the way we feel when we feel ‘down’ or ‘low’ and we lack motivation or the energy to do the things we normally do.
It is generally considered that if we feel this way consistently for two weeks or more then we may be suffering from Depression.
Feelings similar to depression can be experienced as a result of the death of a loved one. Feeling sad is a normal response when we lose someone we love but these sad feelings are not necessarily depression. The depth of the sadness we feel after the death of a loved one will often be an indication of the depth of our love for them. It is always a good idea to discuss your feelings with your health professional or a professional grief counsellor.
Situational or reactive depressions are reactions to a situation or some significant event. When we feel this type of depression we were usually not feeling this way prior to the event.
Energy Psychotherapy techniques Emotional Freedom Techniques and Thought Field Therapy have been found by many clients internationally to be very effective in reducing or eliminating the symptoms of situational or reactive depression when treated by an experienced therapist.
